Public Talk — Maria Charisi

February 11, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Speaker: Dr. Maria Charisi

Title: Gravitational waves – a new window to the universe

Abstract: In 2015, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) observed gravitational waves from colliding black holes for the first time. This monumental discovery, decades in the making, provided a completely new way to observe the universe and will revolutionize our understanding of black holes. I will describe the long journey to the first detection, and exciting new findings of merging black holes. I will also discuss ongoing and future experiments that will detect gravitational waves from the most massive black holes in the universe.
