Physics & Astronomy Colloquium
March 29, 2017 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm
Speaker: Julia Cartwright (University of Alabama)
Title: Dating major events in the solar system using geochemical & chronological studies of meteorites.
Abstract: The ability to date major events in the Solar System is of significant importance in terms of our understanding of planet-forming processes. In this talk, I will describe two research areas in which I use chronometric techniques to determine impact and formation events of planetary bodies. The first is based on Ar-Ar analysis of asteroidal materials in a study to determine whether an apparent Solar System wide event at 3.9 Ga as recorded in lunar material was really as potent. For the second project, I have been working on Pb-Pb chronometry to determine the formation age of an as-yet ungrouped and anomalous meteorite.
The colloquium will be preceded by light refreshments in GL227 from 3:45 – 4:00p.m.
