Public Talk — Nevin Weinberg

February 27, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Speaker: Nevin Weinberg

Title: Stellar Seismology: The Revolution

Abstract:
In the 1960s astronomers discovered that the surface of the Sun is awash in sound waves. These waves propagate deep into the Sun and allow us to study its interior structure in great detail. With the recent advent of ultra-precise space telescopes, the field of stellar seismology has undergone a remarkable revolution in the last ten years: for the first time, we can make high signal-to-noise detections of waves in stars other than the Sun. In this talk, I will describe these new observations, how they enhance and in some cases alter our understanding of stellar interiors, and their tremendous impact on a wide range of topics in stellar, planetary, and galactic physics.
